Südkorea ist aktuell das Land mit der vermutlich größten Klassik-Begeisterung, und Seong-Jin Cho ist einer seiner gefeiertesten Stars. Nachdem er als erster Koreaner den Warschauer Chopin-Wettbewerb gewann, führte er sogar die Pop-Charts dort an. Doch »Himmlische Freuden« hat auch Gustav Mahler zu bieten. »Wir genießen die himmlischen Freuden«, heißt es im Sopran-Solo einer Sinfonie, die so gänzlich anders ist als alle anderen Sinfonien dieses Komponisten: Gustav Mahlers »Vierte« ist bewusst simplifiziert, ja sie ist wie aus einer kindlichen Fantasie heraus entstanden. »Der erste Satz beginnt, als ob er nicht bis drei zählen könnte, dann aber geht es gleich ins große Einmaleins und zuletzt wird schwindelnd mit Millionen und aber Millionen gerechnet«, so Mahler selbst. Und der Dirigent und Mahler-Vertraute Bruno Walter ergänzte: »Wenn der Mensch nun verwundert fragt, was das alles bedeutet, so antwortet ihm ein Kind mit dem vierten Satz: Das ist das himmlische Leben.«

South Korea is currently probably the country with the greatest enthusiasm for classical music, and Seong-Jin Cho is one of its most celebrated stars. After becoming the first Korean to win the Warsaw Chopin Competition, he even topped the pop charts there. But »Heavenly Delights« also has Gustav Mahler to offer. »We enjoy the heavenly joys,« it says in the soprano solo of a symphony that is so utterly different from all other symphonies by this composer: Gustav Mahler´s »Fourth« is deliberately simplified, indeed it seems to have emerged from a childlike fantasy. »The first movement begins as if it could not count to three, but then it goes straight into the great multiplication table, and at the end it is dizzily calculated with millions and millions,« Mahler himself said. And the conductor and Mahler confidant Bruno Walter added: »If a person now asks in amazement what all this means, a child answers him with the fourth movement: This is heavenly life.«
