Tragödie von Sophokles
Es braucht viel Zeit, einen kurzen Weg zu gehen. (Sophokles)
Der Krieg ist vorbei, doch das Blut noch nicht getrocknet. Auf dem Schlachtfeld liegen die Leichen, darunter auch die beiden Söhne des Ödipus - Eteokles und Polyneikes. Im Kampf um den Thron von Theben haben sich die Brüder gegen- seitig erschlagen. Neuer Herrscher im Land ist nun Kreon. Mit der Regentschaft übernimmt er die Verantwortung für eine in ihren Grundfesten erschütterte und verwundete Gesellschaft. Um Ordnung und Stabilität zu schaffen, greift er gleich in seiner ersten Amtshandlung hart durch. Da er Polyneikes als Staatsfeind betrachtet, statuiert er an ihm ein Exempel: Er verweigert ihm das Begräbnis und verfügt, dass er wie ein Stück Vieh vor den Toren der Stadt verrotten soll. Auf Zuwiderhandlung steht die Todesstrafe. Eine klare Botschaft an alle Feinde des Staates. Obwohl Kreon das Gesetz auf seiner Seite hat, ist dieser Beschluss für Antigone, die Schwester der beiden Toten, eindeutig ein Verbrechen. Sie beruft sich auf ein übergeordnetes Recht: Menschlichkeit und Menschenwürde. Und als ihre Worte, Argumente und ihr Flehen an der Staatsraison zerbrechen, lässt sie Taten sprechen: Sie begräbt ihren Bruder und nimmt damit ihren eigenen Tod in Kauf.
Wie weit geht man für die eigene Überzeugung? Und wie groß ist dabei das Gefälle zwischen notwendiger Ratio und ebenso notwendigem Gefühl? Es sind Fragen nach Verantwortung, Moral und nach den Motiven des eigenen Handelns, die Sophokles bereits vor 2500 Jahren, als das Stück uraufgeführt wurde, zur Diskussion stellte. Und in Anbetracht der aktuellen Weltlage und vor dem Hintergrund unserer gegenwärtigen Krisen, die sich in unsere Leiber eingeschrieben haben, gibt es keine einfache Formel, kein einfaches Richtig oder Falsch. Die radikale Verteidigung des Individuums gegen eine vermeintlich autoritäre Staatsmacht ruft im Umkehrschluss auch die Frage nach der Verantwortung des Einzelnen für das Gemeinwesen auf - ein Dilemma.

Bodies lie on the battlefield, including the two sons of Oedipus - Eteocles and Polyneikes. The brothers have killed each other in the battle for the throne of Thebes. Creon is now the new ruler of the land. With the regency, he assumes responsibility for a society that has been shaken to its foundations and wounded. In order to create order and stability, he takes a hard line in his very first official act. As he regards Polyneikes as an enemy of the state, he makes an example of him: he refuses him a funeral and orders him to rot like a piece of cattle outside the city gates. Failure to comply is punishable by death. A clear message to all enemies of the state. Although Creon has the law on his side, for Antigone, the sister of the two dead men, this decision is clearly a crime. She invokes an overriding right: humanity and human dignity. And when her words, arguments and pleas fall foul of the raison d'état, she lets her actions speak for themselves: she buries her brother and accepts her own death.

And how big is the gap between necessary reason and equally necessary emotion? These are questions about responsibility, morality and the motives behind one's own actions that Sophocles was already discussing 2500 years ago when the play was first performed. And in view of the current world situation and against the backdrop of our current crises that have inscribed themselves on our bodies, there is no simple formula, no simple right or wrong. Conversely, the radical defense of the individual against a supposedly authoritarian state power also raises the question of the responsibility of the individual for the community - a dilemma.
