Panel Discussion with Dr. Ekaterina Schulmann (Russian political scientist) & Prof. Dr. Jörn Leonhard (History Department, University of Freiburg): "Authoritarian Renaissance: Fact or Fiction? Understanding Autocratic Resilience in the 21st Century"

About the panel discussion:

Political scientist Ekaterina Schulmann and historian Jörn Leonhard examine the perceived resurgence of authoritarianism in the 21st century. Through a comparative and historical lens, they analyze the factors contributing to the resilience of autocratic regimes, questioning whether we are witnessing a genuine renaissance or a cognitive illusion shaped by the aftermath of the democratization wave of the 80s and 90s. The discussion explores the role of technology, propaganda, economic conditions, and historical legacies in bolstering authoritarian rule. Are modern autocracies really more durable than ever, or are our expectations for their swift downfall rooted in historical misconceptions? Focusing on the "big beasts" of the geopolitical theater, are we missing the quiet democratization elsewhere? Join us for a nuanced exploration of the complexities and contradictions of political change in the modern world.
