Vitra Design Museum eröffnet im Juli 2026 ein neues Masterclasses Programm auf dem Vitra Campus
Das Vitra Design Museum erweitert sein Angebot um internationale Masterclasses, die zukünftig jeden Sommer auf dem Vitra Campus stattfinden und im Juli 2026 starten. Die Teilnehmenden arbeiten über mehrere Tage eng mit führenden Köpfen aus Design und Architektur zusammen, inspiriert durch den intensiven Austausch mit ExpertInnen von Vitra und dem Vitra Design Museum sowie kulinarische und erlebnisorientierte Momente. Die ersten zwei Masterclasses werden vom belgischen Star der Landschaftsarchitektur Bas Smets sowie vom Designteam der spanischen Kultmarke Camper geleitet. Teilnehmen können Professionals und andere Designinteressierte mit Vorkenntnissen, Anmeldungen sind ab sofort möglich.
Der Campus mit seinen Bauten von ArchitektInnen wie Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza, SANAA, Marina Tabassum, Balkrishna Doshi hat sich in den letzten 30 Jahren zu einer internationalen Pilgerstätte für Design und Architektur entwickelt. Mit den 2026 beginnenden Masterclasses finden auf dem Campus erstmals auch mehrtägige Veranstaltungen statt.
Die erste Masterclass findet unter dem Titel »The Process is the Design« vom 6.- 11. Juli 2026 statt und wird von Eliska Horcikova, Marion de Raucourt und Rafel Mateo aus dem Designteam der Marke Camper geleitet. Hier stehen handwerkliche und gestalterische Techniken ebenso im Fokus wie innovative Markenführung und Designstrategie. Vom Know-How der Camper-ExpertInnen lernen die Teilnehmenden, wie Design experimentell und strategisch zugleich einsetzen lässt und so zur Erfolgsformel werden kann. Die zweite Masterclass vom 20.- 25.Juli trägt den Titel »Prototyping the World« und wird von Bas Smets geleitet. Bas Smets ist ein Star der Landschaftsgestaltung und arbeitet an internationalen Großprojekten wie den Außenanlagen der Kathedrale Nôtre-Dame de Paris ebenso wie an der Landschaftsgestaltung des Vitra Campus. In seiner Masterclass gibt er Einblicke in seine Arbeit anhand hochaktueller Themen wie Klimaresilienz, Wasserhaushalt und Biodiversität. Der Vitra Campus wird dabei zum Experimentierfeld und Prototypen einer zukünftigen Verbindung von Natur, Architektur und Design.
In beiden Masterclasses arbeiten Professionals, Studierende und Designinteressierte eng mit den ExpertInnen zusammen und entwickeln eigene Projekte, die sie in Form von Workshops, Gesprächen, Campus Erkundungen und individueller Betreuung vertiefen. Sie erhalten exklusive Einblicke in Sammlungen, Archive, Werkstätten und die Designentwicklung durch KuratorInnen und ExpertInnen vor Ort. Abendliche Gespräche, gemeinsame Aktivitäten wie Barbecues, Schwimmen im Rhein oder Yoga auf dem Campus schaffen Erlebnisse, die Ideen in Bewegung bringen und Netzwerke bilden, die über die Masterclasses hinaus bleiben. Die Teilnehmenden erhalten nach Abschluss ein Zertifikat und die entstandenen Projekte werden im Vitra Schaudepot präsentiert.
Mit den Masterclasses nutzt das Vitra Design Museum erstmals auch den landschaftlichen, kulturellen und kulinarischen Reiz des Dreiländerecks in der Region um Basel für ein mehrtägiges Vermittlungsangebot. Zugleich fügt sich das neue Angebot ein in die Transformation des Vitra Campus hin zu einem Forschungs- und Vermittlungsort. Die Unterbringung während der Kursdauer erfolgt in Eigenregie in Basel und Umgebung. Die Anmeldung ist ab sofort möglich, die Plätze pro Masterclass sind auf 15 limitiert. Bureau Bas Smets zählt weltweit zu den innovativsten Büros für Landschaftsarchitektur und klimabezogene Raumgestaltung. Die Masterclass widmet sich der Frage, wie Landschaften und Außenräume gestaltet werden können, um Resilienz, Biodiversität und das Wohlbefinden von Menschen sowie anderen Spezies zu stärken. Bas Smets und eine weitere Expertin begleiten die Teilnehmenden bei der Entwicklung innovative Prototypen für zukünftige Landschaften - von Modellen und Mock-ups bis hin zu Kartierungen und Szenarien. Der Vitra Campus dient dabei als lebendiges Labor, um ökologische, soziale und räumliche Zusammenhänge sichtbar zu machen und neue Ansätze für resiliente und biodiversitätsfördernde Außenräume zu entwerfen.

Vitra Design Museum Launches New Masterclass Programme on the Vitra Campus in July 2026
The Vitra Design Museum is expanding its programme to include international Masterclasses that will take place annually on the Vitra Campus from July 2026 onwards. Over the course of several days, participants will work closely with leading figures from the fields of design and architecture. The programme combines intensive exchange with experts from Vitra and the Vitra Design Museum with culinary and experiential elements. The first two Masterclasses will be led by the Belgian star landscape architect Bas Smets and by the design team of the Spanish cult brand Camper. Professionals and other design enthusiasts with relevant prior experience are invited to apply. Registration is now open.
Over the past 30 years, the Vitra Campus, with buildings by architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza, SANAA, Marina Tabassum, and Balkrishna Doshi, has developed into an international destination for design and architecture. With the launch of the Masterclasses in 2026, the Campus will host multi-day educational formats for the first time.
The first Masterclass, titled »The Process is the Design«, will take place from 6 - 11 July 2026 and will be led by Eliska Horcikova, Marion de Raucourt, and Rafel Mateo from Camper's design team. The programme focuses on craft and design techniques as well as innovative brand management and design strategy. Drawing on Camper's expertise, participants will explore how design can operate both experimentally and strategically, becoming a key factor in long-term success. The second Masterclass, » Prototyping the World«, will be held from 20 - 25 July 2026 and led by Bas Smets together with Philippa Lankers. Smets is internationally recognised for his work in landscape architecture and climate-responsive spatial design, with major projects including the redesign of the public spaces surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the landscape development of the Vitra Campus. His Masterclass addresses pressing issues such as climate resilience, water management, and biodiversity. The Vitra Campus will serve as a testing ground and prototype for new connections between nature, architecture, and design.
In both Masterclasses, professionals, students, and experienced design enthusiasts will develop their own projects through workshops, discussions, campus explorations, and individual mentoring. Participants will gain exclusive access to the Vitra Design Museum's collections, archives, and workshops, as well as insights into current design processes from curators and experts on site. Evening discussions and shared activities, including barbecues, swimming in the Rhine, and yoga on the Campus, create opportunities for informal exchange and lasting networks. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course, and their projects will be presented at the Vitra Schaudepot.
With the Masterclasses, the Vitra Design Museum also draws on the scenic, cultural, and culinary qualities of the tri-border region around Basel for a multi-day educational programme. At the same time, the initiative forms part of the ongoing transformation of the Vitra Campus into a site for research and education. Accommodation during the programme is to be arranged independently in Basel and the surrounding area. Places are limited to 15 participants per Masterclass. Three early bird tickets are available for each course.

Bureau Bas Smets is internationally recognised as one of the most innovative practices in landscape architecture and climate-related spatial design. This Masterclass explores how landscapes and outdoor spaces can be designed to strengthen resilience, biodiversity, and the well-being of both humans and other species. Bas Smets and Philippa Lankers will guide participants in developing innovative prototypes for future landscapes, from models and mock-ups to mapping and scenario-building. The Vitra Campus will function as a living laboratory for making ecological, social, and spatial relationships visible and for designing resilient, biodiversity-promoting outdoor environments.
