Die Friends of the Wolf Tone sind Musiker*innen, Künstler*innen und Forscher*innen, die sich mit dem Phänomen des »Wolfstons« beschäftigen - einer akustischen Störung, die durch überlappende Frequenzen bei Saiteninstrumenten entsteht. Der Name selbst bezieht sich auf die »Wolfsquinte«, ein Intervall, das als besonders dissonant empfungden wird und in der musikalischen Praxis westlicher Musik systematisch vermieden wurde. Ausgehend von diesen klanglichen Außenseitern erforschen die Friends of the Wolf Tone Vorstellungen von Harmonie und Lärm und greifen dabei auf die Kulturgeschichte des Wolfs als Symbol für Angst, Abweichung und Widerstand zurück - von Mythos des Lykaon über Disney-Bösewichte bis hin zu aktueller politischer Panikmache.

The Friends of the Wolf Tone are musicians, artists and researchers exploring the phenomenon know as the »wolf tone« - an acoustic parasite caused by overlapping frequencies in string instruments. The name itself refers to the »wolf fifth«, an interval perceived as particularly dissonant, that has been systematically avoided in musical practice of Western music. Using these sonic outsiders as a point of departure, the Friends of the Wolf Tone explore notions of harmony and noise, thereby drawing upon the cultural history of the wolf as a symbol of fear, deviation and resistance - from the myth of Lycaon via Disney villains to current political fearmongering.
